Kapija movie

Currently we are producing a film about the Kapija tragedy. The idea was born after the premiere of a theatre piece written, produced and performed by young people from Tuzla.

What happened?

On May 25th 1995 young people gathered on Kapija Square in the centre of Tuzla to celebrate youth day, as it was tradition for decades. It was shortly before the peace and everyone felt safe.

At 20.55h a shrapnel was fired into this group. 72 died and double the number was wounded. The deceased had to be buried at 4.30h in the morning, since more fire had to be expected.
It assumed that the grenade was fired from Mount Ozren which was held at this time by the Serbian Army. The Bosnian Army surrounded this area, captured 100 Serbian soldiers and found an Howitzer, which could have been used for the assault. They brought to the prison on Tuzla. During this time no hostile acts were recorded and the prisoners were allowed to send post to their relatives. The Serbian population of Tuzla did not experience any aggression and was allowed to support the prisoners. After six months all Serbian soldiers were exchanged and so far none of some faced charges.

Our film aims at expressing the effect such a terroristic act against tolerance and peace has and how the population of Tuzla did not retaliate and stick to their their believes.

It will entail the play and interviews with eye witnesses.
